THE CATEGORIES

The following are the award categories at the Africa Food Awards 2023 edition:

PERSONS OF THE YEAR

LIFETIME ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR 

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest accolade bestowed upon the most outstanding change makers in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa.

The recipients of this Award have demonstrated long-term impact through their leadership, dedication and drive, with a significant positive effect on the food industry and economy in their country or region at large.  

This Award is only bestowed to those who have retired from active duty in the industry or other spheres of the food and agriculture sector. It can also be given posthumously.

CEO OF THE YEAR

The prestigious CEO of the Year is proffered to the individual who through his or her leadership has made significant contribution to the growth of his or her company and the food industry at large in the country of operation or the region at large, for a significant duration of time. 

Special focus will be on how the individual has impacted the growth of the next generation of leaders within and beyond their company, including mentorship, capacity building and other programs.

The Award is bestowed to current CEOs and Managing Directors in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa.

OPERATIONS EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR

The Operations Executive of the Year Award is proffered to the individual who through his or her leadership has made significant contribution to the growth of his or her company and the food industry at large in the country of operation or the region at large, for a significant duration of time.

Special focus will be on how the individual has impacted the growth of the next generation of leaders within and beyond their company, including mentorship, capacity building and other programs.

The Award is bestowed to executives with operational roles (Production, QA, R&D, Operations, Supply Chain, Engineering etc) in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa.

YOUNG EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR

The Young Executive of the Year is proffered to the individual who is below the age of 40 and who through his or her leadership has made significant contribution to the growth of the food industry and impacted other young people to take leadership in the industry, academia, research or any other field

The Award is bestowed to current young people who are leaders in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa.

COMPANY OF THE YEAR

COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Proffered to a company that has made significant contribution of the industry, the economy and to the people in the country of operation or the region through recent investments, new product innovations, community impact projects or hitting a significant milestone in its operations in Africa.

The Award is bestowed to companies in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa.

START-UP COMPANY OF THE YEAR

Proffered to a young company  which has redefined the food industry landscape in the country of operation or in the region for the introduction of new concepts such as digitalization or new products ideas.

The Award is bestowed to small and medium scale companies in the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry in Africa that are 10 years and under since establishment.

NEW PRODUCTS OF THE YEAR

The New Products of the Year Award celebrates the best new products by food manufacturers as they compete to have their best innovations stand out on the shelves in the region. 

The Awards seek to encourage greater and more thoughtful and impactful innovation coming out of Africa’s food industry.

Judges look out for innovations that strive to meet rising consumer needs and have broken new barriers in the product’s conceptualisation, unique product formulation, processing and packaging, nutrition and other unique attributes. 

Apart from the overall new products of the year sub-categories, winners will also be feted for new product innovations that showcase unique application of packaging, ingredients and nutritional principles

SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES OF THE YEAR

The Sustainability Initiatives of the Year Award celebrates the best application of sustainability initiatives by the food manufacturing, retail and foodservice industry

To highlight the importance of and breadth of the way the industry is adopting sustainability practices, the category has been divided into 4 sub-categories: renewable energy/energy efficiency, waste/water, local sourcing initiatives and community impact projects.

The Awards seek to encourage greater adoption and thoughtful uptake of sustainability by the food industry.

SPECIAL CATEGORIES

The Special Categories include the following:

  • NGO/Non-Profit Organisation of the Year Award – Celebrates the non-profit organisation with operations in Africa and which has delivered outstanding benefits to the food  industry in the Continent
  • Industry Association of the Year Award – Celebrates the industry association representing a sector in the food and agriculture sector in a particular national or region in Africa and which has delivered outstanding impact on the food industry in the Continent
  • Investments of the Year Award – Celebrates some of the recent investments in food manufacturing plants and other facilities in Africa.
